The Great Choc-Chip Cookie Comp: THE FINALE

We’ve finally arrived.

I started this journey as a fun experiment to kill time during quarantine. With all events, tragedies, and excitement that occurred over the past few months, one thing always remained constant: the chocolate chip cookies.

After WEEKS of testing different recipes, it all really lead up to this moment: the final, side-by-side taste test.

As I tested each new recipe, I saved a few extra balls of cookie dough and popped them in the freezer. On the final day, I took each one out and baked them, one recipe at a time, in a random order. I let each one cool for five minutes before we tasted them, and I didn’t tell my family which was which. They rated each one on a scale of 1-10 for taste, and 1-10 for appearance. We added up and calculated the final scores out of 20.

With that, HERE. Are the final results!

From LEAST favorite to fav:

10. Tasty—10.4 (not very pretty, average tasting)

9. Alton Brown—12.4 (average looking, not much flavor…but my dad LOVED them)

8. Tollhouse—14.2 (VERY small, tasty but not anything special)

7. Chocolate Chip Brown Butter Toffee—15.1 (really pretty, but toffee flavor was weird after frozen)

6. BA’s Best—15.1 (tied w/ Rick Martinez’s, ALSO pretty, brown butter almost greasy)

5. Levain Copycat—15.6 (Large, really pretty, good texture, average flavor)

4. DoubleTree—15.7 (My personal 2nd best option; average looking but really good flavor)

3. Mine—15.7 (tied w/ DoubleTree, wonderfully chocolatey and decent flavor)

2.  Baking Chocolatess—16.7 (pretty, gooey, super chocolatey, almost TOO sweet to me)

1. MARTHA STEWART—17.6. Perfect. Rich dough. Super chocolatey. Wonderful.

If this taught me anything, it’s that all cookies can be considered perfect depending on who’s tasting them. My dad loves the nostalgia of the classic Tollhouse cookie. My brother loves the chocolate overload of the Baking Chocolatess. It really depends on YOUR preferences and your tastes. Martha is perfect to me because of the blend of chocolate and the richness of the dough. The texture is the best balance of crisp outside, gooey inside. Ultimately, it met all of my goals the best.

And there we have it. The great, chocolate chip cookie competition has come to a close. What do YOU like in a chocolate chip cookie? Let me know. And THANK YOU. For joining me on this journey.
